Google today updated its Inside Search site, its homepage for all things search, with a handful of educational and interactive features that explain in layman’s terms how Google’s Search works. Did you know the web had over 30 trillion pages, by the way? Or that Google supports over 100 billion searches every month? Or that Google’s index is over 100 million gigabytes? If you find factoids like that interesting, you’ll probably enjoying a scroll through the new “How Search Works” live infographic, which also contains a few clickable links to charts and graphs showing things like the rise of spam, and milestones in Google’s spam-fighting techniques, among other things.

The update is something of a follow-up to last year’s detailed look into how Gmail works called The Story of Send. For the most part, it’s really high-level stuff here, designed to make the details of technology…

China Says the US Hacks Them Too. Duh

Geng YanshengLast week i wrote a post about how a new report from Mandiant which finally linked the Chinese military to attacks on commercial and government websites and servers. This week Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng said in comments that overseas computer hackers targeted two of its websites an average of 144,000 times per month last year, with almost two thirds of the attacks originating in the United States.

China denies authorizing any hacking of US interests and maintains that cyberforce is for defense purposes only.

Do you think that the United States is hacking Chinese interests as well? When will international pressure mount enough for nations to talk about cyber attacks?

Car Paintball – Yes its as Cool as it Sounds

The folks over at Audi in an effort to promote their new 2013 Audi Rs 4 Avant, attached two giant paintball guns to the front of two cars and let the drivers go at it. They also added in a few other surprises. Check out this awesome hacked together car duel below. God it looks so much fun.

Installing Ubuntu and Windows Side by Side

UdownloadThere are may reasons you might want to install Linux, but no matter what you want it for you don’t have to get rid of your current windows installation to use and enjoy Ubuntu. So i will give you a quick step guide to installing Ubuntu along with Widows. For a more in depth installation guide check here (More complicated then it needs to be).

What you’ll need

– Ubuntu Desktop ISO (download here).
– A blank DVD, the newest edition of Ubuntu is slightly bigger and will not fit on a CD.
– Computer with Windows already installed.

Before we start make sure you have ample space that can be allocated for the Ubuntu partition. I’m not sure what the minimum size is but i wouldn’t go less than 30 to 40 gigs.

Once you know you have space and Ubuntu is downloaded. Burn Ubuntu ISO file to the blank DVD. Once that is complete you can test Ubuntu right off the DVD without installing anything. If you like it shut the computer down.

With the DVD inside your tray, turn on the computer, It should boot right from the DVD but if it doesn’t hold down the corresponding boot key for your computer to choose boot from DVD.

When you come to installation you want to choose to install side by side. If you don’t Ubuntu will write over Windows and you will loose everything. After choosing side by side. There will be a slider that allows you to determine the disk size of the partition you are creating. The partition on the left is the Windows and the one on right is the new Ubuntu one.

After the installation is complete restart your computer and you will be able to choose Ubuntu or Windows and can boot to whichever you want. Have fun and enjoy!

Using a VPN to Hide Your Internet Traffic

With the new Copyright Alert System finally taking effect, many people may be asking themselves how they can hide their internet traffic from their ISP (internet service provider). There are many way you can hide your internet activity including using the Tor browser. But one very popular and growing way of hiding traffic is using a VPN (Virtual Private Network). A VPN basically lets you access the internet like normal however when you connect to a website or something, it looks like a private connection. To your ISP they will still be able to see bandwidth but will not be able to make sense of the traffic coming in and out of your network.

There are many paid VPN services that give you even more protection but unless you own a business or are transferring really secure documents like bank statements or medical records, a free VPN service will be fine. One of the most popular free VPN services is Hotspot Shield which automatically connects you to a VPN when you start a browser. You can download Hotspot Shield here. However the only problem with HS is that it makes adds appear at the top of your browser. No problem though you can install Adblock for chrome or Firefox to disable these adds and still keep the VPN service.

Related – Using Tor browser to hide your online activity

In order to install Adblock for chrome for example go to the official chrome web store, search for adblock and then click extensions. It should be the first one. It is trusted by Google and recommended by a bunch of people.

Once you have Hotspot installed and Adblock enabled you will be able to rest easy knowing your ISP cannot see what your transferring or downloading. Enjoy and be responsible.

In the Front slot above that where the hard drive cage was removed i added an AF120 High Airflow low noise fan.

How To Check If Someone Is Using Your WiFi Network

If you are using an unsecured WiFi router for tour internet connection and  your internet running slower than usual or maybe your downloads or streaming videos are taking forever to download and buffer. One possible reason could be that someone else could be using your WiFi access  I will walk you through a few simple steps to check if someone else is using your network.

Go to start and command prompt. Type ipconfig into the command window and hit enter. Scroll to the top and you should see something like the picture below.

Take the address that is next to Default Gateway and copy it into your browsers URL bar. Once you do that you should be at your routers log in page. If you have not created a log in and password before then check underneath your router to find the default log in and password.

Once you are logged in. Go to Attached Devices from the navigation bar. It might be called something different since each router is set up a differently but should be something along those lines. From here you will be able to see a list of devices attached to your network  If you see any that you do not recognize then it is time to change your passwords and block those IP addresses.

Want To Make An App But Don’t Know Code? No Problem

A new startup by Siebrand Dijkstra called App Machine promises the future of app creation by allowing anyone to create deploy and maintain there own android or IOS applications without writing a single line of code. The program works by letting users create there apps by using “building blocks” like Legos to put together anything they want. The blocks will allow users to integrate anything that normal app designers use.

The Pricing for this new software will be set in three stages. Each price is for one app but at each level you get more features and options for the greater design features. The starting price for an app is e399 and goes to e1500 for the advanced developer. Will this change the way people make apps? I think it will certainly let more people get into the app business that don’t know code, and will open the door for independent developers to create money generating apps on the cheap as compared to finding a studio to bring your idea to life. App Machine is currently in BETA and has signups on there website.

New PC Build – Part 1

So I have decided it is time for a new desktop PC, I have been working and gaming on my Sony Vaio for about two years now after selling my old rig and its time to upgrade to another killer rig. This will me a multiple part series since it is an ongoing project i hope to finish soon. The first thing i started with was a Corsair Carbide 500R White case. It is a beautiful case that is simplistic with no flashing LED’s or swinging doors.

Opening up the case, I removed the center hard drive cage to make room for extended graphics cards and extra fan space. I also removed the standard Corsair fans that came with the case.
